How To Build A Healthy Skincare Routine - For Beginners

Updated: Feb 5

Do you want to build a healthy skincare regime and are looking for where to start from? Well, you are in the right place. Here is the easiest guide to build your own regime.

It is so easy to be intimidated with all these crazy 10 step/ 20 step skincare regimes you see social media influencers promoting on different platforms that you have no idea where to begin or even which products to invest in.

"The reality is skincare should not be that complicated, simply find the products that work for your skin type and learn how to use them. It doesn't have to be a crazy 50 step routine or even that costly."

Skin Analysis

Before ever considering products to invest in, you MUST take a moment to understand your skin type, this is the first step in determining which active ingredients in products will work for you. In beauty science, they are 3 skin types dry skin, oily Skin and combination skin. Once you are aware which one you are, bingo. Skip the frustration part of purchasing costly products even worse being influenced into skincare trends that have nothing to do with your skin condition that end up causing more damage than good. It is important to know as well that our skin is ever evolving so what worked for you at one point may not be what your skin may need at other times so always monitor how your skin reacts at different stages and care for it.

The Purchase

As we can all see, new skincare brands surface every other day and each company promises their products are the best thing for your skin needs. The reality is you don't need all these products promoted. As you carry out your skin analysis you will notice skin disorders For example crappy and dry skin, acneic skin, hyper pigmented skin, large pores, etc.

Here's a quick guide of what ingredients to purchase when you have:

  1. Dry skin: Hydration products like hyaluronic acid, product with humectants like glycerin, honey, aloe vera, cactus, coconut oil (not on its own)

  2. Oily Skin: Products that contain Salicylic acid, glycolic acid, Coconut oil,Zinc oxide

  3. Combination skin: Works with a combination of dry and oily skin products, play around with different combinations of products.

  4. Mature skin: Opt for anti aging products with ingredients like retinols and retinoids, collagen boosters, hyaluronic acid, caffeine products, Vitamin C products etc

  5. Acneic skin: Salicylic acid, peptides

  6. Hyper pigmented skin: Azelaic acid, niacinamide, Ceramides

***Important note**** Always wear sunscreen religiously***** Your skin depends on it***

The Process

Well now that you have the right products, it's import to practice a good cleansing ritual. Cleansing is not only washing your face and layering your products in their right order, It involves your lifestyle. Skin care tightly affiliated with good lifestyle and diet, you can't go around it. What you ingest will always reflect on your skin so if you eat crappy food like junk food and have generally poor hygiene and lifestyle choices, it is more likely that your skin will be less healthy than someone who eats balanced diet and has a healthy life choices

  1. Wash your face before bed always and apply your nightly routine.Follow My Current Skincare Routine

  2. Sleep on clean preferably satin pillows.

  3. Eat healthier food and drink lots of water.

  4. Exercises regularly, this helps you to sweat and push out the unwanted toxin in the body.

  5. Have a healthy sleep routine.

  6. Visit a beauty therapist at least once a month.

  7. Drink lots of water. Checkout the secret behind drinking more water and how it can transform your health

The Results

Now here is the crazy part, a lot of people expect immediate results after purchasing and following a routine and most in a period of 2 week if they see no results, they discontinue the use of the products.

From my knowledge as a beauty therapist and a skincare formulator, the reasonable time frame for a product to show effectiveness is 4 - 6 weeks and sometimes 8 - 12 weeks depending on how strong the active ingredient is. So it important to be diligent and patience with skincare results, it's worth it. If you keep switching out your products and introducing new ones every time, it may cause irritability to the skin. Always remember, be patient with the results.
